Ideal Process Of Co-Washing Your Hair

It is otherwise known as a conditioner only washing. It is a natural way of washing the hair, relying only on conditioner and discarding shampoo. You can either do it on a daily or weekly basis. Co-washing makes your hair smoother, softer and easier to manage. There are two main advantages of opting this; it saves both times, and money thus makes it a budget friendly beauty treatment for every woman.

The ideal candidate for Co-washing:

People who have curly, wavy or dry hair will be most benefitted from co-washing. People whose hair are naturally dry and tends to form ringlets are usually advised to go through the process. Even people who coloured their hair should also go through this, as regular shampoo strip away some colour pigment along with dirt making the colour less efficient.

The science behind it:

Most of the conditioner contains some amount of detergents which we call quats or cationic surfactants. Cetrimonium and behentrimonium chloride are also subsets of those quats. During the process of cleansing, when the quats mix with water, it extracts some amount of dirt from the hair, without making it feel squeaky.

Apart from that, the conditioner as per its moisturising nature retains the moisture of the hair. As we know, shampooed hair cleans most of the natural oil from the hair along with dirt. However with conditioning, your hair will retain the moisture, make it silkier and last longer. But people with oily scalp or have dermatitis should not go through the process.

A process of co-washing:

1. Like you soak up a dirty pot, soak your hair sopping wet making your hair saturated enough. The ample amount of water will help to rinse out the hair perfectly helping the scalp by the even distribution of conditioner in the hair.

2. Use adequate amount of conditioner, enough to coat every strand from the root to tip of your hair. The size related to golf ball size will do the trick. Even though it may seem a lot, but as you are not just conditioning your hair but cleansing as well.

3. You have to massage the conditioner upon your scalp till it distributes evenly throughout. The massage will help the scalp to break down the oils and another residue from the scalp.

Usually leave the conditioner for three to five minutes, in case your hair is parched or damaged, you can leave it a little longer. After rinsing it clean, you will notice that you won’t need much styling product for your hair. This process will make your hair much responsive.

4. The dirt build up from sweat, conditioner and hair stylers cannot be eliminated entirely. So you must shampoo your hair at least twice a month. It will not dull or dry your hair. If there is still a weighted down feeling in your hair, then approach other wash between co-washing and shampooing.
